Dear Ian, Love the site...it's one of the few I hit regularly (Horse's Mouth!!).On a very exclusive list with Todd,Pete Townshend,and...that's it,I guess. Oh wait, there's also Steve Morse,I'm a guitar player and we must have our heroes(by law). Saw you in Seattle on a warm-up show for "YUIORTA".Little did I know it would be almost a year before the album came out!Stood right in front of Mick, had no idea a Fender Twin could be so fuckin' loud!!My most vivid memories of the show would have to be your first words on stage (an off-mike "***!",having some problems with your pedalboard),and a very solemn shaking of your head (rather than going for the high note in "Ships".) Anyway, glad to hear you so enthused about the new album,I'll make sure to pick it up!Keep goin',you're absolutely inimitable and honesty is such a scarce quantity these days.... Shaun

As a musical artist, no one has given me more pleasure and entertainment, over 30 years now, than Ian Hunter. The many many times I rocked out, or was emotionally moved by a Ian Hunter song are countless. You have truly been with me all the way. I also have found you to be a very genuine and kind man to your fans, and that says a lot. If the new CD is half as good as the last one it will be wonderful. I will be in the UK 6/27 to 7/7 . If you are not playing there then I will hope for a U.S. tour. However it goes.....all the best....and thanks so very much for all the wonderful memories/songs in the past.....and for the ones to come.......Steve

I used to buy every David Bowie record I could get my hands on at Kmart in Memphis, TN where I grew up.Well one day they were out of Bowie records, so I picked up this one that had "Bowie Mainman Productions" in the credits. I bought it even though I never heard of the band, Mott the Hoople. It was All the Young Dudes. I was such a young dude I had to sit out the Mott concerts while my older brother went. Finally I got to go to some concerts, but not Mott the Hoople. I had tickets to see Hunter/Ronson in 75 but they cancelled. So to pay Ian Hunter back for cancelling the Memphis gig in 75, I moved to Indianapolis and lived happily ever after.

Saw MTH in early 70's and various Ian bands several times. The marionette tour was life altering. You know, growing up in the rural South in the '70s and trying to explain "Sucker" and "All the Young Dudes," I never could have imagined communicating with Ian Hunter. Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to see MTH or IH, but always made sure the local record shop had the releases the minute they hit the streets. My buds and i actaully became quite proficient air guitar players when we performed "One of the Boys," off the live album. Well ***, I grew up, got a job(s), got married, had kids, got divorced and moved on. The only constant through all those gyrations was an album, cassette or now CD with Ian giving mass and form to a hundred different emotions. It never ceases to amaze me that the same MTH album I grooved to in 1972, has a substantial nugget for me in 2001. I've got hundreds of albums (cassettes, CDs - technology simply won't wait for me) to which I listen. I only have a few that listen to me. Fully 90 percent of those have Ian front and center. Quite honestly, the pace of life hasn't allowed me to keep up with a lot of your new stuff. But then again, I'm glad there are no new Raymond Chandler books nor Hemingway short stories. Good is simply good, no reason to add chrome. Superlatives are not my gig, craftmanship is. Afer spending damn near 30 years as a writer, I do know a little about communication. IH commmunicates and transcends...well. Rock on!

Hello Ian!! You are my favorite male performer of all time and I'm still a huge fan of Mott the Hoople (all these years later). I had a friend of mine burn my Mott albums to CD. Have you changed the cover of your book, Diary of a Rock Star? The photo on the web site is different than the photo on my book. You autographed my book on your bus in Columbus, Ohio. You played a gig at the AlRosa Villa (early 1980's). Just read your column and remember all the times I've seen you - the first time you opened for Heart in Cleveland (which was the only reason why I saw Heart). I saw you with Todd Rungren at the Cleveland Agora and quite a few times in Columbus. Hoping to see you in LA, I'm sure you'll stop here on your next tour. You certainly have tons of great material of your own, however, i was just wondering if you ever thought of doing one of Mick's songs. I'd love to hear you perform "The Empty Bed". Take care...looking forward to seeing you!! Best- Rhonda

Ian: Nice to hear you are back and in fine form. I am a veteran of the 70s era, owning still all of the Mott the Hoople collection on vinyl. As a confused teen in the 70s your writing gave me an intellectual and motivational edge, aside from the fact that Mott the Hoople Live annoyed my parents to no end when the volume was cranked to 10. Your persona and image are intriguing and your dress code is nothing short of impeccable. You are a class act and this "Boy" who put the coke away ages ago and now, at 41, still reflects on the wild days with positive sentiment and with you and the other Hooplers as one of my personal sanctified teenage icons. Thank you for your honesty, your perserverance and the great music. Sincererly, Eric Abramson Phoenix, AZ

Hi, Do you have a deal for the new album in America? If you don't, and you don't get one, does this mean no shows in the USA? If you play the Bowery again please have Ricky Bryd open for you, I've been meaning to get down to NYC to see him live and I never had time, so if I could see you both in one trip, that would be so cool! Best of luck to you and yours in the new year, I hope the album does really well. Cheers, Jay [email protected]

Nice site, glad it's here. Big fan of your music; taught myself to play guitar and sing at the same time (yes, that is correct, AT THE SAME TIME) while strumming little ditties like All the Way from Memphis and 3000 miles from here. Well, it was you and Syd Barrets' "wouldn't ya miss me". I figured, my God, if you two can do it, damn it all if I couldn't too. Thank you! And thanks for the memories. hope to catch you live one of these days (never have). Really loved the songs you wrote on YUIORTA, especially, Sons and Lovers and Following in your footsteps. Dear Ian, Sorry to Yak back to the past but I’ve always been intrigued why you’ve never had a full collaboration with Miller Anderson. I think he would of made a great replacement for Mick Ralphs or Luther Grosvnor in Mott the Hoople or at anytime when you and Mick Ronson took a sabbatical. Is there any chance of you working together in the future? May I also take the opportunity of thanking you for the 100 pound cheque you sent to the Fountain of Life orphanage here in Pattaya & the autographed photo which also raised 100 pound at auction. Looking forward to the new album. Regards, Kim Fletcher

Dear Ian, I am a fan since the early seventies. Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to attend a concert of Mott The Hoople or you performing solo with Mick Ronson, here in Holland. Understand you are planning a tour. Hopefully you'll do Holland as well. On the other hand, could also hop over to the UK. Have most of the albums and recently purchased 2 cd's. For me you are one of the Icons of pop. As I do play your music ever since and still. Good things last. Especially so when driving the car. Think you are a fine musician, but an excellent writer. I do like your lyrics. Boy, Irene Wilde, It ain't easy when you fall are among my favorites. Is it possible to obtain the lyrics from your songs, with or without music? Wishing you a happy and healthy 2001. Fred

If anybody likes to mail me - your`re welcome at [email protected] Finally I like to say, that I`ve got the chance to see Ian 3 times in germany -1989, 1990 (both with ronno) and 1997 -lately most of my records are personally signed by Ian. It was FANTASTIC - the gig, the backstage atmosphere - everything. Jan.

Ian, I've been a fan for almost 30 years now. I've seen you at the Uris with MTH, saw Mott at Avery Fisher Hall (with Ray & Nigel) and saw you with Ronno several times (Hammerheads and My Father's Place). I've turned hundreds of people onto Mott and your solo stuff and I'm very glad to see all the 'web attention' that you get. For years I was frustrated that you were not more popular but reading Horses Mouth and the other web stuff has opened my eyes to all of the different kinds of success there are out there. My son Patrick is 8 and loves MTH and Ian Hunter. He thinks Roll Away The Stone is the coolest. My Favorites: God (Take 1) Driving Sister One of The Boys (The Bad Co. song pales) Moon Upstairs Lounge Lizard Standing In My Light ...and way to many to list here. I'm looking forward to seeing you (either in NY or Philly or both)in concert and we will have a sizable contingent there. Do you think VH-1 would ever do a Behind The Music on MTH? I think there's enough drama it just may be to long ago for these guys. Thanks for all the help that you probably don't know that you've given me - Bob

Hi Ian, I met you with a friend mine, oh it had to be over 20 years ago when you lived in NY. We were fans and went looking for your house, found it (you were working (I think) on a small bridge that lead onto your property. We sat with you for about an hour and half, reminiscing about what at the time were the "old" days (you also bummed "fags" from me). I'm sure you don't recal, but you were very gracious and generous with your time. It is a moment I recall to folks when they say celebs are all the same (I know, good for the raging ego!). He Ian. Just picked up" Once Bitten Twice Shy" & I am totally blown away,as I have been by your work since 1968! When are you coming to Cleveland!?!?!!!! It's about time you show those Hall Of Fame assholes what a real R&R; Hall Of Famer sounds like! I still haven't set foot in that place & won't until they wake up. I still remember the back to back Mott shows at the Allen Theatre in the early 70's ,2 of the finest shows I've ever attended ( and there have been many!). Please play Cleveland!!!!SOON! Can't wait for the new album.

hi, i've seen ian live around the north of england approx 12 times in the last 3-4 yrs.great shows, alexanders, chester sept 8th '97 just about the best gig i've ever seen, and you played my fav'te "waterlow", what a treat (after i'd shouted for it continually at "jilly's" manchester, just months before, sorry, i'd just split up from my girlfriend at the time and that gig was great comfort and a great outlet for me then - timing!), and i was only about 8 feet away, stupendous. i've always been one of your biggest fans since 73/74 (i was 13/14), had a ticket to see mth at the palace, manchester, but it was cancelled after your exhaustion from the broadway tour, so first time i saw you was in 1975, palace, manchester with mick r, that was great too. won't keep you long, just to say i'm reading the campbell dvine biography at the moment, so (just like doing the high jump your "own way" and getting the best results at the school in shropshire), keep on making music in your own individual way as you always have, and stay about 150yrs ahead of your time (when will they catch up with the songwriting, music etc!!!, ask max). looking forward to more dates and great shows in 2001. best wishes to you, trudi and the kids. (ps, great meeting you at bilston tracey and allowing my photo with you - waterlow, much appreciated). from a massive fan, andy barlow xxxxx.

Hey Ian! Thanks for all the great music over theyears. I saw you back in 1979 at Cobo with the Kinks. You blew me away then and now. It's amazing how you can go from rockers to slow balads. Keep it up! I'm sorry about Mick Ronson, I really enjoyed his work with and without you. If I know enough in advance I would like to see you perform again. I would set aside some vacation to do it. good luck with the next CD, your friend in music. Kurt.

I just want to thank you for providing great rock and roll at a time of my life when I really needed it--jr. high & high school(not that I don't listen to it now..barely picked up a 2-fer CD with the first mott & mad shadows on it-still don't get "crossroads"/D. Sahm in context of Englishmen but it is a great version). Made me feel superior to have a cult band that meant & said a lot to me in the wilderness of Colorado among Journey, Segar & Zep fans. By the by, if you go to my website you will see a pen & ink portrait of yourself from the once bitten album in my gallery/B &W; section-took about 4 weeks to put all the dots on the hot press but it turned out terrific-the curls in the hair were MURDEROUS

I couldn't help but over hear some drunk the other night go on & on about Queens 'Bohemian Rhapsody', and all I could think of was how much Marionette must have influenced them. I've recently been listening to the Phil Spector Box set, 'Back to Mono' and wonder if you've ever talked with him about a collaboration in the studio. You know, your music / his sound?Just an idea... Frank-

Ian, Merry Christmas to you and your family! Good luck with the new CD, If it's any thing like your last 2 it will make my year! How do you do it? Your lyric's on Artful are your best yet (I loved alot of Dirty Laundry too!). Two questions: Did you write alot of /or use alot of open G tunings with Mott? I was bashing around on my guitar and found that the voicings sounded just like One of the Boys, Jerkin, etc. When I was just starting on guitar I used to play along with the Dudes/Mott LP's and while it sounded close, it never sound like what the rhythm part was exactly. So, did I crack the code? More of a request than a question? How's about playing Northampton Mass.? We are a funky college town between New York and Boston (just over the border from Ct. off 91) and have at least 2 great rooms here (Iron Horse and Pearl St.) and some great local radio (WRSI in town and RFB in Brattelboro VT.). I know touring has to be cost effective but we are between two major markets, and if you can make it , my wife and I will spring for dinner and drinks! Anyway, thanks for all the years of music, it's pulled me through some incredible hard times. All the best in the days to come... Rik

I was priviledged to see you and Mick in Pittsburgh in 88 and 89, and my hightlight was yes we came on your bus and were able to meet you. Will never forget your friendliness even after I know you had to have been exhausted. Your music has touched me in so many ways and has helped me get through alot of things in my life. Dear Ian and Trudi, (or is it Trudy?- "memory like a sieve"- love that saying, been using that for years, they told me not to smoke that stuff-thank God I stopped when I did!) I just wanted to wish you both and the rest of the 'clan' and new band a very Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy prosperous New Year and a kick-ass tour!!! Can't wait to see you again Ian, it's been way too long. Just very happy that you've survived it all. You are the most 'human' rock and roll star/legend around and that makes you not only an enigma, but a genuinely cool 'dude'. I just bought my son a nice keyboard for Christmas, he wanted to study drums like his dad but I told him "Do you want to make music or make noise? (JK) He's got serious piano fingers, they're like two inches longer than mine and he's as tall as me and still growing (He's 14 on Christmas Day) He's already writing lyrics. By the way, he thanks you (as I do) for answering the question re. who was "a friend" in 'Boy". When you come to Philly town, we will be there. I work nights and I can't think of a better excuse to call out 'sick'! Still listening to OBTS everyday, especially, the Ballads, but also love 'Expectations', (a perfect R&R; song!!!) Thanks for keeping in touch with us Ian, it means a lot, really. You're the REAL DEAL! Peace and Love, Big Bob and Bob Jr. PS- Thanx for 'All Is Forgiven' for personal reasons- an incredibly beautiful and moving gem of a tune- and 'Michael Picasso' as well. Mick was quite fortunate to have a friend and 'brother' like you. Still miss that "edge". I sat my boy down and made him listen to 'The Outsider' and told him "Now THAT is a guitar solo" - about as close to perfection as it gets. What great gifts he left us. Sorry for babbling on so.

Ian: I'm a long-time fan. I saw you play the Hammersmith Odeon in April 1975 (yipes, over 25 years ago!) with Mick Ronson. I had just arrived in England that afternoon and had not slept but was too excited to sleep. I went for a walk alone (as my mates crashed) and when I walked by the Hammersmith Odeon I recognized the building from the Who's Quadrophenia album. I walked in to find you guys doing the soundcheck. I was lucky enough to be able to buy 4 tickets at the box office before returning to the hotel and have my mates fight over who'd come along that evening. Brings back great memories. I've added your site to my "favourites" and will check in periodically. Cheers, Martin Egan

I listened to "Boy" over and over while writing my dissertation . . . I'm not sure why. It's that line between humor and depth I guess. Something in your voice. Hi, Ian ! Merry Christmas from Germany. Have been a fan for well a long time. Did write a couple of mails concerning a tour to Germany, you mentioned a bad deal the last time around in November 1997, the show at Colos-Saal in Aschaffenburg was great. My wife and I had a great time. Will we ever see you in Germany again ? Can't wait for the new album, release date ? Ever thought of concert video or dvd for all the fans who missed you live. Enough for today, keep on rockin' and keep doing what you do. Oh by the way am just in the middle of Campell Devine's book, "All the Young Dudes......official Biography........." it's a good read, however don't you think its a rather sad story of missed opportunities. Ian, I have always been one of your biggest fans! Ever since I saw you on TV when I was a kid on a show called "In Concert". You were doing the Marionette tour(MTH). I have met you back stage at a show you did in Chicago in 1988 at the Riviera Theatre. You and Mick signed a Playbill for me and my wife(which was pregnant for 2nd daughter). I also saw you play at the Park West a few years earlier. That concert was simulcast on WXRT which I taped for myself. The tape finally wore out. I was blown away when I got your MIA album and got the extra CD which has several songs on it from the show. I even have 1 of your original Overnight Angel albums the was being played at a record store before it was "supposed to be released". I talked the owner out of it. It was never released in the US. I still like it a lot. I think that is because I love/own everything you have done. I got your Artful Dodger CD from a British site(CDZone). I think it is excellant. I think your first 2 CDs are timeless. BTW-I know that you were talking about Chicago(Weeping Virgin Mary) in your Resurrection Mary song. I was confused on your references to 1935.... I know that you are not THAT old. I could go on for a long time on which songs I like...etc. Good Luck on your new album!!! David Kitchka

Ian, Great website. Ever since I got my computer I have managed to find out a whole new world of people out there who still remember MTH and IH like me! And now to have messages from yourself to we fans is great! Keep up the good work, and make sure you visit Cleveland in the new year! P.S. The Akron Agora where you played in 1980 was turned into a country/western bar called the Boot Scoot Saloon. But the Cleveland Agora is still there! Hope to see you there soon!! Mark Brown

Great to see your web site! For what it's worth, Mott the Hoople was the last Rock and Roll band that I ever liked (others include Beatles, Kinks, etc). Keep on rocking, Ian!

Ian, I'm absolutely thrilled with all of the correspondence, and the newfound exposure to information! This is all any dedicated fan could ever ask for, and I've been wondering about you and your musical doings for a long time. I can't wait until you are in my hometown area, and will do whatever it takes to be part of the experience! Meanwhile, have an excellent Holiday Season from beginning to end, and enjoy your family throughout! Fondly, Kage.

Ian - big fan from NJ since '79. Caught you a few times since, including The Bowery. Can't wait for the new album (and tour)!! I'm sure the upcoming tour will give you the warm fuzzies, no matter where you find yourself playing. I think the reason why I've listened for so long is that your never predictable nor commercial. It's always fun to see the dumb looks I get when I tell people who my favorite band is - you and MTH 8-) Question - On Ronno's 'Showtime', on the intro to 'White Heat', you say "Boyd-on, by that enthusiastic reception". What the hell does that mean? Thanks. Have a happy and a merry and best of luck in '01. Craig

Dear Ian, I'm a huge fan from way back. I am from Chicago and love the song Ressurection Mary. I've also been to the racetrack in Cicero a few times as well. It's a great song. Great album. I thought Artful Dodger was one of your best efforts. You should get the song to some og the radio stations here. I thought of it alot. Especially around Halloween when one invariably hears the Ressurection Mary story brought up again. Keep rocking! I'm looking forward to the new album. The website is great as well! Dick McDermott
